Cougars Clobber Sequoias In First-Round Game

VENTURA, Calif. - Behind Angelica Sahagun's 26 points and 11 rebounds and Jazzmyn Davis' 21 points and 11 rebounds, defending tournament champion College of the Canyons defeated College of the Sequoias, 83-49, in the opening round of the 14th Annual Ventura College-Kiwanis Club Tournament of Champions on Friday afternoon.
After a sluggish start, when the Cougars fell behind 11-2 to open the contest, COC ran off 11 straight points to take the lead and never trailed again in the game.
Leading 32-24 at the half, the Cougars exploded for 51 second half points for the win, its second of the young season.
Amanda Ajdari's 12 assists and Delisa Chapman's 14 rebounds contributed to the 34-point victory.
The Cougars will play tomorrow in the tournament semifinals against undefeated Mt. San Antonio College, the state's No. 1 ranked team at 5 p.m. It is a rematch of a game played last week, when the Mounties defeated COC, 65-55, at Mt. SAC.
