No. 6 Canyons Wins 11th Straight, Green Sets New Shot Block Record
COC sophomore Hannah Green finishes game with 13 blocks to eclipse previous single season mark of 131 set during 1994-95 season.
The College of the Canyons women's basketball team claimed its 11th straight victory, and sophomore Hannah Green established a new single season shot block record, as the No. 6 ranked Lady Cougars put together a 59-49 victory over visiting L.A. Valley on Saturday night.
In a game that proved to be a low scoring affair for both teams, Canyons was limited to just nine points in the opening quarter, and headed into the second frame trailing 10-9.
But head coach Greg Herrick's team quickly found its rhythm, as the Lady Cougars outpaced the Monarchs in the second quarter to head into halftime up 24-18.
COC's strong defensive effort was led by Green, who recorded seven blocks in the first two quarters of play en route to a game high 13 blocks on the night.
With that effort Green, who already holds the single game blocked shots record of 15, established new single season record for rejections on Saturday.
Green's total of 132 blocks thus far this season has eclipsed the previous mark of 131 set by Kerri Garland during he 1994-95 season. The West Ranch High School graduate will now look to extend that mark during the team's final eight regular season games.
On Saturday, Green finished just one rebound shy of recording a triple double, adding a game-high 14 points, nine rebounds and three steals to her record-setting evening.
The Lady Cougars also received a huge spark from sophomore guard Tamara Smith, who finished the game with 13 points off the bench.
During a key run in the second half Smith drained back-to-back three pointers that ignited the home crowd and helped pace a 9-2 run by the Lady Cougars.
Freshman guard Cierra O-Brien finished with 10 points and two assists, and sophomore Monica Friedl had 10 points, seven rebounds and a team-high four assists.
As a team, Canyons shot just 31.6 percent from the field compared to 25.8 percent by the Monarchs.
However, COC converted on 17-of-20 free throws for an 85 percent mark.

Canyons (16-4, 6-0) will next travel to Antelope Valley (9-12, 4-2) at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 27.
