Former Two-Time MVP Leslie Ortiz Inducted into CCCWBCA Hall of Fame
Former College of the Canyons women's basketball player Leslie Ortiz was inducted into the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Hall of Fame, during a ceremony held Thursday, March 9, at the CCCAA State Tournament hosted by Las Positas College.
Ortiz was a two-time conference MVP and All-State selection at the point guard position for COC.
As a sophomore she helped lead Canyons to a 30-6 overall record during the 2006-07 season, while setting the state record for assists in a season with 390.
Described by COC women's basketball head coach Greg Herrick as "the purest and most complete point guard I have ever coached," Ortiz is the only two-time conference MVP in program history.
"Whenever there is a discussion of who is the greatest player in program history, the name Leslie Ortiz always surfaces near the top of the list," said Herrick.
"She is a model for every point guard who puts on a COC uniform," he added.
On Feb. 11, Ortiz was also enshrined in the COC Women's Basketball Hall of Fame with a brief halftime ceremony during the Cougars' game with conference rival Santa Monica College. She joined longtime COC assistant coach Harlan Perlman in the hall's class of 2017.
Ortiz is the fourth former Cougar to earn CCCWBCA Hall of Fame Honors, joining Sha'Tasha Allen (1998-2000), Kyetra Brown (1995-97) and Tressie Millender (1988-1990) on that distinguished list.
