College of the Canyons wound up on the wrong end of a 56-49 final score vs. West L.A. College on Saturday, as a lackluster third quarter performance proved to be the difference for the Lady Cougars.
The two teams played a slow-paced opening 10-minutes followed by a second quarter that Canyons able to claw out a slim 21-19 advantage at the half.
COC sophomore guard Alexis Orellana finished the game with 18 points and six rebounds, helping Canyons to make a final stand with 12 points in the fourth quarter.
Cristian Patron shot an efficient 5-of-7 from the field to chip in with 14 points and six rebounds. McKenzie Stoehr was next with nine points but struggled from long range, making just 1-of-9 attempts.
Canyons (15-10, 2-1) combined to shoot 31.5 percent for the game and committed 19 turnovers.
West L.A (18-8, 3-0) was led by Hayavin Johnson's 21 points and seven rebounds.
The Wildcats currently lead the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division by a game over COC. The two programs were co-WSC championships at the end of the 2017-18 season.
COC returns to action Saturday, Feb. 9, vs. Bakersfield College at the Cougar Cage. That contest is scheduled to tip at 7 p.m., with a brief 'Sophomore Night' ceremony proceeding the game.
