College of the Canyons named longtime coach and Kinesiology and Physical Education (KPE) faculty member John Wissmath head coach of the women’s basketball program. Wissmath, in his 15th year as the COC softball head coach, inherited the women’s basketball program from longtime head coach Greg Herrick after his retirement in June 2022. Herrick carried the program for upwards of 30 years leaving a long list of accomplishments, including his recent induction into the CCCWBCA Hall of Fame.  Wissmath started the new chapter with 79-51 victory over Chaffey College in the Cougar Cage before leading the program to a 17-11 overall record and 11-3 mark in Western State Conference (WSC), South Division play. Finishing third in conference, Canyons qualified for postseason play for the 26th time in program history, and first time under Wissmath. However, momentum was halted in the first CCCAA SoCal Regional round with a 73-63 road loss against No. 15 Rio Hondo College. Sophomore Lulu Salloom was named a 2023 Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Two-Year College Coaches’ All-American Honorable Mention honoree, just the second player in program history to achieve the honor. She finished second in the state with 16.4 rebounds per game en route to topping 800 career boards in her two seasons at COC. The program transferred sophomore Natalie Satamian to continue her career at Life Pacific University while Salloom signed with Whittier College.

College of the Canyons returned to action posting a 20-8 overall record and 8-4 mark vs. conference foes to log the program’s 25th appearance in the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs in what would be longtime head coach Greg Herrick’s final season at the helm. COC finished runner-up in the WSC, South Division then picked up a home postseason victory over Orange Coast College in the CCCAA SoCal Regionals, before losing to host Irvine Valley College in the next round. The Lady Cougars were ranked among the state’s top-10 programs throughout the season. On Friday, Dec. 17, 2021 Herrick picked up his 600th career victory at the college, as Canyons fought for a historic 78-67 win over Rio Hondo College during day one action of the Glendale Crossover. At season’s end freshman forward LuLu Salloom was named the WSC, South Division Player of the Year in addition to being selected a CCCWBCA All-State First-Team honoree. Salloom finished the regular season averaging 16.2 points and 14.7 rebounds on the season. Joining Salloom on the All-WSC, South team were guards Monique Febles, Justice Walters and Malia Semana. In March, former assistant coach Harlan Perlman was inducted into the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Hall of Fame, officially becoming the first assistant coach to be selected by the organization's Hall of Fame committee. In June, Herrick announced that he would step away from the program after a 30-year run that included 16 conference championships and 24 postseason appearances. John Wissmath was named head coach of the program in August.

2020-21
College of the Canyons athletic programs did not compete during the 2020-21 season due to cancellations based on the COVID-19 pandemic.

College of the Canyons finished the season 13-14 overall and 8-6 vs. conference opponents to place fourth in the WSC, South division. Despite winning its final three games to close out the regular season, COC failed to reach the postseason for just the third time in head coach Greg Herrick's 28 seasons at the helm. During the regular season, Canyons recorded back-to-back wins vs. state ranked opponents Pasadena City College and Ventura College on Dec. 20 & 21. COC sophomores McKenzie Stoehr and Cristian Patron were both named All-Western State Conference (WSC) First Team selections. Freshman Diamyn Davis was an All-WSC Honorable Mention selection. Stoehr and Patron both committed to Mt. Mercy University in the spring. The women’s basketball program has seen at least one student-athlete move on to play with a four-year program every year dating back to the 2006-07 season. In March, long time COC women's basketball assistant coach Harlan Perlman was selected for induction into the California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Hall of Fame, becoming the first assistant coach to be selected by the organization's Hall of Fame committee.

College of the Canyons returned to the postseason after a two-year hiatus by posting an overall record of 17-12 and conference mark of 4-2 to finish as runner-up in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division. The No. 15 seed Lady Cougars then suffered a one-point loss to No. 18 Mira Costa in the opening round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. COC had three players earn all-conference honors with sophomore Alexia Orellana and freshmen Cristian Patron and McKenzie Stoehr named All-WSC First-Team. Orellana, who ranked second in the conference and No. 18 in the state with an average of 18.3 points per game, was also named a California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) All-State Second-Team honoree. Orellana and sophomore Shauna Van Grinsven were both named to the CCCWBCA Academic All-State Team

2017-18

College of the Canyons finished the 2017-18 season with a 16-11 overall record and 7-1 mark in conference play to share a co-Western State Conference (WSC), South Division Championship with West L.A. College. The championship is the 16th in program history, all won under COC head coach Greg Herrick. Despite that regular season success, Canyons did not qualify for the postseason. The Cougars had four players earn all-conference honors with sophomore Kalana Inemer and Morgan Bizzell joined by freshman Maryrose Elias and sophomore CiCi O’Brien as First-Team selections. Inemer, who played her freshman season at COC during the 2010-11 campaign, was second on the team in scoring at 15 points per game. Her 13.9 rebounds per game led the WSC and ranked fourth in the state. She also recorded double-digit point totals in 18 games and double-digit rebounds in 24 contests. At season’s end Bizzell committed to continue her career at the University of the Virgin Islands, while sophomore Dayna Tanaka committed to attending La Sierra University.

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball program concluded the 2016-17 season with an 11-15 overall record and 5-3 mark in conference play to finish third in the WSC, South Division. Canyons achieved this success despite playing with a roster of just six players for the entire conference schedule. COC head coach Greg Herrick failed to guide his team into the postseason for just the second time since the 1992-93 season. The Cougars had three players named to the 2017 All-Western State Conference (WSC), South Division Team, with point guard Marina Rojas, freshman guard Dayna Tanaka and freshman forward Morgan Bizzell each earning all-conference honors.

The 2015-16 College of the Canyons women’s basketball team won its 15th Western State Conference (WSC) championship with a 23-6 overall record and a 13-1 conference mark under head coach Greg Herrick. The season also included a 17-game winning streak that stretched from Dec. 18, 2015 to Feb. 13. 2016. The Cougars earned a postseason berth but were eliminated in the opening round of the CCCAA SoCal Regional Playoffs. Herrick was named WSC Coach of the Year for the ninth time in his career. Meanwhile, sophomore Hannah Green completed one of the most impressive seasons in the program’s history by earning WSC, South Player of the Year while leading the state in blocks, and topping the conference in rebounds. She also set school records for career blocked shots (198), and blocked shots in a game (15) before being named to the 2015-16 CCCAA South Region All-State Team. Green eventually committed to continue her playing career at Illinois State University. In all, five players were honored with All-WSC selections as Monica Friedl, Marina Rojas and Cierra O’Brien were each named All-WSC First Team selections, and Erin Kelly earned Honorable Mention recognition. Friedl, who led the Lady Cougars in scoring with 18.9 points per game to also rank second in the conference, committed to play at California State University, San Marcos.

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team finished the regular season with a 16-13 overall record and 6-8 mark against conference opponents to place sixth in the Western State Conference, South Division. The team failed to qualify for the postseason for the first time in 22 seasons. On Dec. 12, 2014, the Cougars defeated L.A. Trade Tech 80-65 to give head coach Greg Herrick his 500th win at COC. Freshman forward Monica Friedl earned 1st Team All-WSC honors while leading the team with 14.3 points per game, collecting 9.4 rebounds per game and a 45.9 shooting percentage. Sophomore guard Qimmah Russo earned Honorable Mention recognition and finished second on the team in scoring by averaging 13.1 points per game.

The COC women’s basketball team completed the 2013-2014 regular season with a 13-15 overall record and a 7-5 mark in the Western State Conference, North Division record to earn an at-large bid into the postseason tournament. The 2014-15 campaign was highlighted, however, by “one of the greatest seasons ever for a COC player” according to head coach Greg Herrick. Keiona “KeKe” Matthews was named WSC Player of the Year averaging 31.1 points per game, and ranking fourth in the conference in rebounding with 11.2 rebounds per game. She scored 40 points or more in three games including a season-high 47-point effort against Moorpark College. Matthews was also voted a third-team All-State selection. She is the ninth COC player to be named Player of the Year. Sophomore guard Shawn Kolani was also a WSC first-team All-Conference selection while averaging 18.9 points per game and 8.7 assists per game in conference play.

The College of the Canyons women’s basketball team finished in second place in the Western State Conference, South Division, after completing the season with a 10-2 conference record. In the Cougars’ 20th consecutive playoff bid, No. 9 Canyons met with No. 8 Long Beach City College, but eventually fell 75-41. Sophomore Dalisa Chapman was named All-State Southern California and four Cougars were donned all-conference.

The 2010-2011 College of the Canyons women’s basketball team wAS crowned Western State Conference, South Division champions after completing a 24-8 regular season and going 11-1 against conference opponents. As a result, the team earned a No. 7 seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The Cougars eventually lost in the third round regional, however. The conference championship is the programs 13th WSC title under head coach Greg Herrick. High points of the season included titles at the Mt. SAC Tip-Off and Coast Christmas Tourneys. COC also began conference play with an eight-game winning streak that included a season-high scoring performance of 127 points against Glendale Community College. Kelli Lewis and Jazzmyn Davis were named to the California Community College Women’s Basketball Coaches Association’s All-State Team.

The women’s basketball team completed another amazing season, led by 18-year head coach Greg Herrick. He collected his 400th win at COC this season, making him the most successful women’s basketball coach ever at College of the Canyons. The team also won an incredible 19 consecutive games. The winning streak started on Dec. 12 with a victory over Mt. San Antonio College, who the Cougars had not beaten in 15 match ups dating back to 2002. Unfortunately, the Western State Conference Champion Cougars lost in the first round of the playoffs to L.A. Trade Tech. Despite the early exit out of the playoffs, College of the Canyons women’s basketball player Ashley Wakefield was named California Community College Women's Basketball Coaches Association (CCCWBCA) Co-Player of the Year for her efforts during the 2009-2010 season. Wakefield is the first COC women’s basketball player ever to receive the state’s top honor. The award came on the heels of her conference MVP award. Four other Cougars were also named all-conference, along with conference coach of the year honors for Herrick.

With one of the most athletic teams that head coach Greg Herrick has led in years, the women’s basketball team dominated conference play with a perfect 12-0 record. The first-place finish for Herrick was his 11th title and eighth non-blemished Western State Conference season in his 17-year career. COC defeated Mt. San Jacinto in the first round of the playoffs, 81-77, needing all 40 minutes to hold off the feisty Eagles. Following the win against the Eagles, COC traveled to Ventura College to face a team that had not lost a single game during the 2008-09 season. The Cougars had their hands full and could not handle the fast paced basketball of the Pirates and lost, 77-51. A school record four women were named First-Team All-Conference – Sophomores Charity Smith, Arielle White and Britney Bradley and freshman Ashley Wakefield. Herrick was named the Conference Coach of the Year.

2007-08

Greg Herrick and his women’s basketball team won another conference title in 2007-2008, the program’s third straight. The team struggled, though, once it reached the playoffs. In the opening round against Saddleback College, the Cougars shot just 29.4 percent from the field and were held to 59 points as the Gauchos turned aside any thoughts the Cougars had of making a deep run in the postseason. Andrea Bobic was named to the All-State team along with the all-conference team. Sophomore Kelly O'Linn, freshman Britney Bradley and freshman Charity Smith also earned all-conference nods.

2006-07

The Cougars returned to the state tournament in 2007 with the help of two-time conference MVP and All-State guard Leslie Ortiz. The team won its ninth conference title with a perfect 12-0 record and a 30-6 record overall. COC, who had not been to the state tournament since 2004 defeated Long Beach (84-74), Mt. San Jacinto (67-61) and San Joaquin Delta (86-75) to enter the state tournament's semifinal round. Facing powerhouse Mt. SAC, who COC had lost to twice in the regular season, COC fell to the Mounties, 59-42. Sophomore Ortiz, sophomore Facion Edwards, sophomore Melissa Tachias and freshman Andrea Bobic were named to the all-conference team, while Ortiz was named the conference MVP for the second year in a row. Ortiz and Edwards also earned All-State accolades for the season.

2005-06

The Cougars, with only one sophomore, returned to the top spot in the Western State Conference South as the team goes 11-1 in conference after a tough preseason schedule against nine of the state’s top-20 teams. Going into conference play, Canyons only held an 8-9 record, but the tough season worked out in the end for COC. The Cougars went on to win 11 games in a row before losing in the last game of the season to L.A. Valley College, 72-64. In the playoffs, Canyons was slated against Compton College, which ended in an 85-82 win for the Cougars. Next up were the eventual state champions, Mt. SAC. College of the Canyons put up a good fight against the Mounties, but were not able to pull out a win, as the Mounties defeated Canyons 78-66. Head Coach Greg Herrick earned Coach of the Year Award from the WSC after leading his team to the top offensive scoring team in the state. Point guard Leslie Ortiz was named MVP of the conference after she averaged 15.1 apg during conference and 10.7 apg overall.

2004-05

College of the Canyons finished the season 16-12 and make it to the first round of the playoffs. The Cougars end up losing a close game to Antelope Valley College 81-79 in overtime.

2003-04
For the fourth straight year and the seventh time in the last nine years, the College of the Canyons Women’s Basketball team completed the season as the #1 scoring team in the state. Averaging 85.6 ppg, the Cougars scored over 100 points seven times this year and captured the Western State Conference South Division championship with an 11-1 record. The Cougars finished the season with an overall record of 24-6 (the tenth straight year of over 20 wins) and were eliminated in the Southern California Regional Finals by eventual state champion Mt. San Antonio College, 74-70.

The Cougars top the state as the No. 1 scoring team in the state with 81.8 ppg.

2001-02

2000-01
The Cougars clinched their sixth Western State Conference South title in nine seasons under head coach Greg Herrick with a 12-0 record in conference.

1999-00
College of the Canyons women’s basketball team finished a perfect conference schedule with an 11-0 record and grabbed the Western State Conference South title once again. The Cougars, seeded No. 4 from the South, faced No. 1 seeded Shasta College from the North in the Elite Eight California State Championships after winning 14 consecutive games. The Cougars lost to Shasta, 89-70, finishing the season 26-7.

1998-99
The Cougars have the best start of the season (6-1) since the 1991 season. The Cougars finished the season 20-10.

1997-98

Forward Zevette Mitchell pulls down a school record 30 rebounds in a game against L.A. Valley College (2/7).  COC makes it to the Southern California Regional game to play Orange Coast College to seek their third trip to the state championship in the last four years. Unfortunately, COC lost 74-66 to OCC.

1996-97
LaCresha Clark became the school’s single-season scoring leader to surpass Tressi Millender who scored 633 points in a single season (2/19). Clark finished the season with 722 points. The Cougars surpass their single-game scoring high of 136 set earlier in the season, to score 146 points and set a record breaking 43 steals (2/20). College of the Canyons finished the regular season 29-4 overall and 12-0 in conference, while winning the Western State Conference South title and earning and second place ranking in the state. COC was ranked No. 1 in the state in scoring offense. COC made it all the way to the state championship game to play Ventura College, but lost, 68-59.

Under third year head coach Jeff Dunlap, the Cougars finished the season with a sensational record 25-8 and received its first ever berth to the state tournament. The team lost to College of the Sequoias in the first round of the state tournament.
