Cougars Take First in Season Opening WSC Tournament
The College of the Canyons women's golf team got its season started by participating in the two-day South Coast Tournament held at Olivas Links Golf Course and Buena Ventura Golf Course on Sept. 7-8. The Cougars fared extremely well on both courses, with the second day of the event serving as the first Western State Conference (WSC) tournament of the year.
On Sunday, the Cougars carded a 342 at Olivas Links Golf Course, eventually finishing that portion of the tourney in second place behind College of the Desert. Sophomore Andrea Webster led the way with a first round score of 84 and freshman Tiffany Whittaker followed close behind with an 85. Julia Youn and Elisabeth Mortensen followed suit with scores of 86 and 87 respectively.
During the second day of play, the Cougars really began to find their rhythm, combining to shoot a 307 en route to finishing in first place at the WSC's first tournament of the year. Webster and Youn each carded scores of 75 to finish tied for the individual third place spot. Whittaker followed up her strong first round with a score of 77, while Alexis Miller rounded out the scorecard with an 80.
That effort helped Canyons outpace Santa Barbara City College (324), Citrus College (341) and Bakersfield College (407).
After the first WSC tournament of the year, all six COC golfers are ranked in the conference's top 10.
College of the Canyons will return to action Monday, Sept. 15, when they take part in the second WSC conference of the year, at Santa Barbara Golf Club.
