Cougars Blank Bakersfield, Take Sole Possession of First Place

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – In a match of the unbeaten Western State Conference, South Division teams, the College of the Canyons women's soccer team downed Bakersfield College, 1-0, on Tuesday afternoon at COC's Upper Field. With the win, COC is now 7-1-2 and 3-0 in conference and knocks Bakersfield down to second place. 

Canyons and Bakersfield went back and forth, until Canyons opened up the scoring. In the 82nd minute, sophomore Stacey Atwater hit a header in front of the Renegade's goal, after a corner kick. The play was set up by newcomer Lizzie Rivas.

Canyons held on to record its fifth straight shutout. Cougar goalkeeper Katherine Koury earned the clean sheet after five saves on the afternoon.

COC dominated Bakersfield in shots by firing off 21 to 8 of the Renegades. Atwater paced the Cougars with seven and two on frame and freshman forward Leilani Konrad turned in four with one on goal.
COC will return to action on Friday, Oct. 11 as they travel to Glendale College for a 5 p.m. match.
