Cougars Defeat Hartnell 3-1, Lundin Gets 100th Victory

The College of the Canyons women's soccer team got back in the win column with a 3-1 milestone victory over Hartnell College on Saturday, during the final day of the Nike Soccer Community College Showcase, hosted by Ventura College.

The win was the 100th career victory for COC head coach Justin Lundin, who took over the women's program in 2009. Since then, Lundin has posted a record of 100-28-6 with the Cougars, having won five straight Western State Conference, South championships and four WSC Coach of the Year Awards.

On Saturday, the Cougars (2-1-0) scored three first half goals to jump out to an early advantage.

COC freshman midfielder Angel Quintero booted her team-leading third goal of the season on an unassisted scoring play that put the Cougars on the board first.

Later in the half it was freshman defender Hailey Phipps putting her name in the scorebook with another unassisted goal, her first of the season.

Rounding out the first half scoring barrage was sophomore forward Amanda Balzer, who also netted her first goal of the season. Freshman forward Taylor Lopez was credited with an assist on the play.

Hartnell was able to get on the scoreboard late in the first half to make it a 3-1 score, but from there the Cougar defense shut things down.

COC goalkeeper Kiana Hemphill (2-0-1) earned the win.

Canyons will next travel north to face Fresno City College at 5 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9.
