College of the Canyons continued its late-season push with a 2-1 victory over visiting No. 13 Citrus College on Tuesday, good for the Cougars' sixth win in its last seven matches.
Canyons (11-5-4, 8-2-3) got on the board in the 24th minute on a goal from Araceli Castaneda, her team-leading 13th of the season. That total also ranks fourth in the Western State Conference (WSC). Lesly Cabrera picked up an assist on the play.
Already in control, the Cougars added a second score in the 36th minute, this one coming off the foot of Andrea Marufo, her fourth of the year. Once again it was Cabrera credited with an assist on the scoring play.
The 2-0 score held true until a late surge by Citrus resulted in a goal from Katherine Gomez in the 76th minute, to bring the Owls (14-6, 11-2) within a goal.
Canyons recorded just four shots in the game compared to 11 from Citrus. That disparity was countered by the Cougars' strong defensive play and the presence of freshman goalkeeper Aaliyah Lopez (10-5-4). Lopez finished with seven saves in the game.
COC will close out the regular season vs. Glendale College on Friday, Nov. 15. First touch is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
