Bio

Charles Martinez begins his 11th season as an assistant coach for the College of the Canyons women’s soccer team. 

His responsibilities include assisting the head coach in player and program development, training, conditioning, drills, coaching, recruiting, coordinating team activities, and other duties as assigned.

Martinez started his soccer career as an international player in Ecuador, eventually playing professionally for Deportivo Cuenca (First Division), on the U17 National Team and with the Universidad de Cuenca. 

After his playing career Martinez discovered his passion for coaching. He now has more than 25 years of coaching experience in the sport.

Martinez has worked as the head coach of a variety of entities at the professional, club and high school levels, including stints with the Santa Clarita Blue Heat FC, Golden Valley High School, Hoover High School, Panorama High School, Crescenta Valley Soccer Club, North Valley Soccer Club and the LA Premier Soccer Club (formerly LA Futbol Club Chelsea), to name a few.

Martinez is the Director of Coaching, Technical Director and co-founder of the FC Valencia youth soccer club, which hosts 14 youth teams in the Santa Clarita area and 12 teams in the San Gabriel Valley area.  

He has also earned his professional level United States Soccer Federation (USSF) National “A” Coaching License, travelling extensively to Italy & Belgium to work with the coaching staffs of the Italian and Belgium National teams, Inter Milan, AC Milan, Roma, Ajax, RSC Anderlecht and Club Brugge as a component of continuing his coaching education.  Martinez is also a USSF Youth Talent Identification Scout for the United States Men’s National Soccer Team. 

In his spare time, Martinez enjoys following all levels of international soccer, running, playing ‘FIFA’ video games, walking his dogs, hiking and traveling. 

Martinez resides in Valencia with his wife, Claudia, and together they have four adult children.
