VENTURA, Calif. — College of the Canyons women's tennis will conclude its inaugural season by sending four student-athletes to the 2018 California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Southern California regional tournament after having two of its doubles teams qualify during last week's conference championship tournament.
The doubles duo of Jenny Cranert and Leilani Figalan will be joined by the team of Marisa Wambolt and Brienna Best at the CCCAA Singles & Doubles Championships being held in Ojai April 26-29.
Wambolt and Best started their run at the conference championships by posting an 8-0 victory over the team of Lorenne Connors and Vanessa McAllister from Victor Valley College in the tournament's opening round.
Likewise for the No. 11 seed Canyons duo of Cranert and Figalan, who were 8-2 winners over Viktoriia Beongova and Alondra Collier of Antelope Valley College in opening round action.
However, both teams then lost their second round matchups.
Cranert/Figalan were defeated 8-2 by the No. 5 seed team of Allie De Marco and Alyssa Powel from Ventura College.
Wambolt/Best fell 8-0 to the No. 1 seeded duo of Srna Lepchevska and Hailey McNall from Glendale College.
Those results sent both COC teams into the 'back draw' portion of the bracket.
In Saturday's opening action, Wambolt/Best ran into another tough matchup, this time losing 8-2 to No. 12 Keressa Garland and Tricia McClain of Ventura. Now facing elimination, Wambolt/Best rebounded for an 8-0 win over No. 11 Cornett Wright and Janice Vidal from AVC in the afternoon round. That performance was good enough to snag a qualifying spot at the regional championships.
Meanwhile, Cranert/Figalan came away with an 8-0 win over the duo of Allie Samp and Ava Andrasi from Victor Valley to begin Saturday's round and punch their ticket to the regionals in Ojai.
