Canyons cross country back on the course at Mark Covert Classic

The College of the Canyons cross country program continued its season by running at the annual Mark Covert Classic hosted by California State University, Fullerton on Saturday, Sept. 2.

Featuring a mixture of four-year school, community college and club teams, the event annually attracts a combined field of nearly 250 runners from across the region.

COC sophomore Díani Ellis ran to a 16th place finish on the 5K course with a team-leading time of 19:13.3.

That mark helped the COC women's team to an eighth place finish among the field of 13 non-Division 1 program competing at the event.

Sophomore Stephanie Martinez was next for COC at a time of 20:22 to place 52nd, and Sophia Stephan was third for the Cougars in 90th place at 21:36.

Amanda Finn (22:17/102nd), Lupe Alaniz-Ruiz (22:28/105th), Kianna Schlesinger (24:16/129th) and Kaitlyn Gomez (25:06/136th) also competed for the Cougars.

The COC men's team only entered four runners in the event, and thus did not qualify for team competition.

Individually, Travis Cetti (28:35/117th), Cody Roelofson (28:54/127th), Garrett Noltemeyer (29:46/150th) and Dimas Murguia (31:59/179th) ran the 8K course for Canyons.

Canyons will next compete at the Fresno Invitational on Saturday, Sept. 9, at Woodward Park.
