2019 COC Softball Summer Clinic

CLINIC CURRICULUM

Open to youth players ages 10 to 14, this single day, two-part clinic will include instructional sessions for both pitching and hitting. Both sessions will place an emphasis on strengthening current skill sets while introducing new techniques. Open to beginning, intermediate and advanced skill levels this clinic will help all players take their game to the next level!

Pitching Clinic Players will be taught basic pitching mechanics with specific instruction on topics including how to improve your spin, location, movement, and speed. Participants will work through a variety of drills designed to strengthen current skill sets and introduce new techniques. Players signed up for the pitching portion of the clinic are asked to provide their own catcher and bring two softballs (catchers will NOT be charged for attendance). It's also recommended that all players wear cleats.

Hitting Clinic —  Instructors will demonstrate a variety of proven hitting techniques through the use of specific batting drills designed to instill the basic fundamentals of hitting. Players signed up for the hitting portion of the clinic are asked to provide their own bat and helmet. It's also recommended that all players wear cleats.

CLINIC INSTRUCTORS

COC softball head coach John Wissmath was a two time All-American Decathlete at California State University, Chico, but his true passion is softball. Wissmath has participated in national competitions as a pitcher in men’s fastpitch leagues across the United States and brings more than 25 years of experience as a coach. Wissmath has more than 300 career wins and seven Western State Conference (WSC) titles during his tenure at College of the Canyons. In addition, he amassed more than 250 wins as head coach of the softball program at Butte College in Oroville, CA, where he coached 12 seasons prior to arriving at COC.

Former COC standout Katie Taix has been pitching for more than 15 years. Taix played at Alverno High School and moved on to play two seasons for Wissmath at College of the Canyons before graduating in 2018. Taix is now an assistant coach at Crescenta Valley High School and provides personalized pitching instruction to players of all ages in the Pasadena area.

CLINIC COSTS

The 2019 COC softball summer clinic is $35 for players attending only ONE session of the clinic and $55 for players attending both sessions, with online pre-registration. Walk-up registration will be $40 for one session or $60 for two sessions (please make check payable to COC/ASG and write softball clinic in the memo line).

All proceeds directly support the COC softball program.

CLINIC TIME & LOCATION

Sessions are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. (pitching) and 11:30 a.m. (hitting) on Friday, July 12, at Whitten Field located on the COC Valencia campus at 26455 Rockwell Canyon Road in Santa Clarita.
