The Cougars closed out their three-game series with conference leader Glendale College, downing the Vaqueros 5-2 on Saturday to finish the weekend one game back with three to go.
Canyons (24-12, 13-4) led almost the entire way, save for a brief middle-innings tie that saw the game knotted at 2-2.
The Cougars pushed across an early 1-0 lead after Nick Henry was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. That brought home Calvin Estrada, but COC couldn't get anything more.
In the second, Josh Arkin smacked a solo home run to put the game at 2-0.
Glendale (25-12, 14-3) answered back with two runs in the top of the fourth off COC starter Jackson Cunningham.
That score held true until Estrada clubbed a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth, his team-leading 10th of the year. He finished the game 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and a pair of RBIs. He also reached base after being hit in the helmet the inning prior to his home run.
Blake Doremus added an insurance run in the seventh with an RBI-double that brought Tyler Erne home and made it a 5-2 ballgame.
Cunningham (5-3) got the win after allowing two runs, one earned, and striking out five batters to go with four walks.
Jarret Poh threw the final three innings to pick up his fifth save of the year. He allowed one hit, two walks and struck out three along the way.
Canyons will look to close the one-game gap on Glendale during its upcoming series vs. Victor Valley College. COC is set to host the Rams on Tuesday before traveling to VVC on Thursday. The regular season finale will be played 2:30 p.m. Friday at Cougar Field.
The Vaqueros host Citrus College on Tuesday and Thursday, before making the trip to Glendora on Friday.
