By Mari Kneisel/COC Sports Information

GLENDORA — College of the Canyons finished its series vs. Citrus College on the road in a 10-inning ball game Saturday. The Cougars went toe-to-toe with the Owls for the first nine before taking off in the 10th and pushing across five runs to secure the 12-7 win.

Though Citrus nabbed an early five run lead, the Cougars quickly caught up in the third and fourth innings. Ryan Camacho got the Cougar offense moving when he grounded out, making way for Jovan Camacho to score the first run.

With Mikey and Doyle Kane on base, COC freshman Tafton Hensley ripped the Owl's lead apart with his 13th home run of the season and third in two games. Hensley leads his team in home runs this season.

The Cougars took the lead for the first time in the sixth at 6-5 when Andy Ambriz singled allowing Mikey Kane to score.

Freshman pitcher Albert Prado opened the game for Canyons. He pitched one inning before handing the ball to Justin Tejeda for another inning. Prado walked two batters, struck out one and allowed five runs on four hits, three of those being earned runs. Tejada issued one walk before head coach Chris Cota looked to Scott Bauman for the next six innings.

Bauman lead the Cougars through a large portion of the game giving up only two runs on five hits and rendering one walk and seven strikeouts. He then was relieved by Xavier Stoker in the ninth, who carried the Cougars through the rest of the ball game.

Heading into the 10th inning with a 7-7 tie game, the Cougars powered past the Owls putting up five runs and closing the game out with a 12-7 Cougar victory.

The go-ahead run came from a bases loaded walk. The other four were scored on RBI singles from Rowan Teran and Ryan Camacho and a sac-fly from Mikey Kane to cap the scoring.

Stoker (3-3) had one hit and one strikeout in the one and 1/3 innings of work, enough to credit him with the win.

The victory moved COC into sole possession of the second place spot in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings. L.A. Valley(23-14, 9-9), Citrus (16-21, 9-9), L.A. Mission (20-16, 9-9) and Antelope Valley College (19-16, 8-10) all remain in the postseason hunt, with the top two teams from the conference slated to enter the playoffs.
