WILMINGTON — College of the Canyons played to a 6-4 road win at L.A. Harbor on Tuesday, plating two runs in the ninth and then holding on after a late Seahawks rally.
Canyons (2-4) did the majority of its scoring in the late innings, hanging runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings. That effort helped COC to its second win in the last three contests, and its first in four road outings to begin the year.
The Cougars jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the second inning behind Liam Ostrom's solo home run and a Jacob Flores RBI double that brought in Michael Hogen.
COC starter Tyler Hawn worked six and 1/3 innings for the win to even his record at 1-1. The sophomore out of Castaic High School allowed two runs, one earned, on five hits with a pair of walks and six strikeouts.
Flores added a solo homer of his own in the seventh inning to kick start the late-innings rally. The freshman backstop finished the day 2-for-4 with the pair of RBIs.
In the eighth COC sophomore Reid Farrell forced in a run to make it a 4-2 lead by stealing third and advancing home on an L.A. Harbor throwing error.
Jung Jun Lee singled in a run and Paul Lizzul worked a bases-loaded walk to tack on the Cougars' last two runs in the ninth.
L.A. Harbor (1-5) tried to answer back with a pair in the home half of the ninth but could get no closer. The Seahawks received a home run from Pup Ibanez-Eddy, who later recorded an RBI sac-fly to lead the home side.
LAHC starter Ronnie Ogusuku (0-2) lasted into the seventh inning, allowing three runs on seven hits with a walk.
Wesley Yim pitched the final two and 2/3 innings to earn his second save for Canyons. He was charged for the two late L.A. Harbor runs.
Kotaro Kuwatani led the Cougars with three hits, stole a base and was one of six players to score a run.
Canyons and L.A. Harbor will complete the two-game set Thursday, Feb. 8, at Mike Gillespie Field. That game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start and will be live streamed to fans free of charge via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
