Cougars Open Season With 76-60 Win Over Cuyamaca College

College of the Canyons returned to the Cougar Cage on Friday with a 78-60 victory over Cuyamaca College to begin the 2022-23 season at day one of the 14th Annual 'Clash at Canyons' Tip-Off Event.
Just six minutes into the first quarter Canyons (1-0) trailed by 13 points as a result of three turnovers and a few missed shots. Soon after, Canyons rallied back with 20 points to make it new game at 24-24
The Cougars continued putting points on the board to finish the first half of play leading 38-30.
Cuyamaca (0-2) led the half in assists on nine passes that led to points compared to the Cougars' five. COC sophomore point guard Dillion Barrientos led the Cougars in scoring with 15 points to end the first half of play on a 6-of-10 shooting performance.
The second half of play saw the Cougars grow the lead to as many as 18.
The Coyotes Xavier Rubio, Sergio Franso, and Anthony McManus all would finish the game leading Cuyamaca in scoring with 10 points each. Cuyamaca's Elijah Johnson tallied five steals and eight points to go with seven assists.
COC's Jimmy Galgano and Daniel Barrientos would combine for 35 points in the game.
Freshman Jonah El-Farra crashed the boards all game for the Cougars, racking up 16 rebounds to lead all players.
Canyons out-rebounded the Coyotes 49-30 and converted 11 second chance points. However, COC committed 23 turnovers. Cuyamaca would capitalize on those miscures in the form of a sprinting offense, taking19 fast-break points.
