SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons men's soccer team battled back in the second half to a 2-2 tie against the Chaffey College Panthers (0-0-2) on Friday afternoon at COC's Upper Field. It marked the first tie of the season for the Cougars, after losing their first game of the season against El Camino-Compton three days earlier.
COC had a rough start to the game as the team was outshot 10-3 in the first half. The Cougars gave up two first-half goals, one at the 21-minute mark and another in stoppage time to end the period.
After regrouping at halftime, Canyons settled down as the squad looked to get on the board.
In the 74th minute, the Cougars subbed in freshman Juan Carlos Diaz into the game two minute later he floated a header past the Chaffey keeper on a cross from Brandon Davy.
That was all it took to get the Cougars offense going and 13 minutes later in the 89th minute, sophomore Jamie Bent took Chaffey's goalie one-on-one after streaking down the middle of the field, to clear it to right side of the net.
The Panthers outshot the Cougars, 18-7, and held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. COC's Miguel Lopez, in his first start of 2013, had three saves in 90 minutes.
The Cougars will remain home and host College of the Sequoias on Friday, Sept. 6 at 4 p.m. on the Upper Field.
