College of the Canyons scored a season-high five goals on Tuesday, including a hat trick from Caesar Dominguez, to defeat visiting Antelope Valley College 5-2 and keep its conference championship hopes alive.
Canyons (8-11-2, 5-3-2) scored three goals in the opening half and never looked book en route to its third straight victory, and fourth in the last five games. The Cougars are undefeated during that period, having also played to a 1-1 draw with Glendale back on Oct. 27.
COC sophomore Aaron Winsick got the action started with a goal in the sixth minute that came by way of an assist from Jamie Ledezma.
In the 19th minute it was Dominguez' turn, as he netted his first goal of the night on an assist from Winsick to make it a 2-0 Cougars advantage.
Dominguez later added a second score on an unassisted goal in the final seconds of the first half.
The Marauders were able to rally in the second half with a goal from Vince Lewis in the 50th minute.
However, AVC (8-11-2, 3-6-1) could not contain the fleet-footed Dominguez who was able to break free on an unassisted goal in the 66th minute to complete the hat trick. Dominguez celebrated the feat with a back flip before becoming the victim of a celebratory mob led by his teammates.
Winsick later added a second goal in the 90th minute to end the scoring with a 5-2 Cougars win.
With one game remaining on the schedule, the Cougars still have a chance to seize the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division championship.
Canyons will next face conference-leading Citrus College on Thursday, Nov. 9. A win by COC coupled with a loss by Glendale College would vault the Cougars into first place.
