Despite having some chances, College of the Canyons suffered a 1-0 loss to Moorpark College on Tuesday as the visiting Raiders were able to spoil the Cougars' 2019 home opener.
Canyons (1-2) tallied 17 shots in the game, including eight from freshman forward Dylan Sullivan, but could not get on the board.
Moorpark (2-2) scored a goal in the 29th minute on a free kick from Omar Cabanas that just managed to float over the outstretched hand of Canyon goalkeeper Kian Bensend.
The Raiders' victory was the second in as many games and helped get Moorpark back to .500 on the year. Goalkeeper Davis Sharts recorded four saves in the win.
Bensend (1-2) was strong in goal with eight stops to help keep Canyons in the game until the final whistle.
Canyons was able to earn five corner kicks compared to three from the Raiders. A combined three yellow cards were issued in the game, with two of those fouls committed by Moorpark.
The Cougars will return to their home pitch on Friday, Sept. 13, with a 4 p.m. match vs. Taft College.
