Cougars Earn 2-1 Victory Over Visiting Moorpark

College of the Canyons netted two first half goals and then played a clean final 45 minutes to get past visiting Moorpark College 2-1 on Tuesday, giving the Cougars their first win of the young season. 

Canyon (1-2) has played now played three games over the course of four days beginning with a season-opening road contest at Pasadena City College on Aug. 26, followed by an historic international match vs. the Tahitian U20 National team the next night.

Despite good efforts in both contests, the Cougars entered Tuesday's match, which was played under 100-degree temperatures, still looking for victory.

COC freshman Alec Fryer scored an unassisted goal in the 17th minute to quickly move ahead 1-0.

In the 40th minute it was Jason Arana, by way of an assist from Andranik Soghomonian, with a score that put Canyons on top 2-0.

Ivan Kerum (1-1) started in goal for Canyons and recorded a save in the first half. The Raiders' Marcel Kamberian was able to get one past Kerum in the 44th minute, which put the match at 2-1 heading into the half.

The Cougars continued to play well after the break, earning four corner kicks down the stretch and five for the game. COC also tallied 16 shots in the game, with nine in the second half.

Moorpark goalie Todd Crabtree finished with eight saves in taking the loss (0-1). 

Matthew Swanson was inserted into the game for Canyons to begin the second half in goal and was credited with three saves in the game.

The Cougars will next travel north to take on College of the Sequoias at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 6.

Canyons then returns home for a tilt vs. Taft College at 6 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9. That match will be live streamed to fans via YouTube on the Cougars Sports Network.
