SANTA MARIA — College of the Canyons broke a five-match losing streak by playing to a 1-1 draw at host Allan Hancock College on Tuesday, behind a strong defensive-minded second half that kept the Bulldogs off the board.
Canyons (1-7-1) scored first in the ninth minute on an Alec Fryer goal that came in the form of header to the back post. The play was the result of a free kick sent into the box by Drew Leskin, who was credited with an assist on the play.
Allan Hancock (1-6-2) netted the equalizer in the 36th minute on a score from Jesus Hinojosa. That score came after a handball foul that went against the Cougars.
With the match tied 1-1 heading into the second half, freshman goalkeeper Matthew Swanson was inserted into net for Canyons.
Swanson responded with four saves across his 45 minutes of play to help blank the Bulldogs in the second half and allow Canyons to get the important non-conference draw.
The Cougars will next see action on Tuesday, Oct. 4 at Chaffey College. COC will then complete its non-conference schedule at home vs. L.A. Mission College on Friday, Oct. 7.
