Lady Cougars Win 1-0 Over Folsom Lake on Opening Day

By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director

College of the Canyons pushed across a run in the first inning and that proved to be enough as the Lady Cougars took down visiting Folsom Lake College 1-0 behind the arm of freshman Lexy Angulo at Whitten Field on Friday.

Canyons (1-0) got its Opening Day victory behind just four hits. The Cougars worked a pair of walks and swiped five bases in the contest but managed to get past third base just once.

COC sophomore Julia Fuentes singled to lead off the season then advanced to second base on a sacrifice bunt from Ari Soto. Ashlynn Heck then singled to move Fuentes to third and set up the lone scoring play. During the ensuing sequence Heck broke for second, prompting a thrown down from the FLC catcher that skipped into center field, allowing Fuentes to come home at 1-0.

Folsom Lake (0-1) collected four hits in the game but could do no damage against Angulo (1-0) who won her first career start as a Cougar. She scattered four hits and walked one batter to go with three strike outs.

Fuentes finished the game 2-for-3 with the game's lone run. Soto and Heck were the only other members of the Canyons lineup to record hits. Brianne Tall and and McKenzi Gardette both drew walks to reach safely.

Folsom starter Isabella Savala (0-1) took the loss. She pitched the full six allowing four hits, two walks and the unearned run alongside four strikeouts.
