John Wissmath begins his 17th year and 16th season at the helm of the College of the Canyons softball program in 2024, having amassed a 387-224-7 record in that span.

As the head coach, Wissmath has led his teams to Western State Conference (WSC) championships in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2013, a co-championship in 2014, 2016 and 2018.

Wissmath had his best season-to-date in 2012 as the Cougars won a state-best 42 games and were named the No. 1 seed in the Southern California playoffs.

In 2015, Wismath won his 200th career game as head coach at College of the Canyons. He followed that up with his 300th career victory as a Cougar in 2018 and his 350th during the 2022 campign.

Wissmath's teams have also found success in the classroom with the softball program having previously been honored as a California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Scholar Team Award recipient, and his players consistently graduating and transferring to play at the four-year level.

In 2022, Wissmath added to his coaching responsibilities by taking the reigns of the COC women's basketball program. He is also a faculty member in the college’s Kinesiology & Physical Education (KPE) department.

Wissmath joined Canyons after 20-year former head coach Ray Whitten retired following the 2007 season. Prior to that, Wissmath served as head coach of the softball program at Butte College in Oroville, Calif., where he amassed more than 250 wins in 12 seasons. During his final six seasons at Butte, Wissmath led the Roadrunners to six straight post-season appearances.

The Bieber, Calif., native was a two-time All-American decathlete at California State University, Chico after two years at Shasta College, where he also competed in track & field, cross country and basketball.

Though Wissmath also succeeded in track & field, his true love is softball, which he has played since high school. Wissmath has also competed in national competitions as a pitcher in men’s fastpitch leagues across the United States and brings more than 25 years of experience to the college.

He and his wife, Nicole, have two children, a daughter Savanna, and son, Easton.
