Canyons Track & Field Runs Strong at WSC Relays

VENTURA — College of the Canyons competed in its second meet of the young season, this time making a splash at the Western State Conference (WSC) Relays hosted by Ventura College.
The Cougars men's and women's team combined to win three events on the day while finishing runner-up in four others.
COC sophomore Sarah Zamudio ran to a time of 15:16.20 to win the 3K steeplechase. Elsewhere, sophomore Trinity Winslow was second in the 400h (1:16.39).
The women's 4x100 relay team of Zeniah Ellsworth, Brittany Kurfurst, Samantha Rodriguez and Rebekah Brooks clocked a time of 54.00 to finish slightly behind the first-place team from West L.A. College (50.93).
Canyons also took second in the 800m Sprint Medley Relay with Brooks, Kurfurst, Ellsworth and Rodriguez coming in at 2:02.27.
The 800m Sprint Medley Relay on the men's team included Semaj Freeman, Layne Buck, Dylan Roof and Joshua Christopher. Together, they paced a second-place time of 1:37.38.
In the 4x200 relay Kory Bacon, Buck, Simon Sampson and Jerome Hughes checked in at 1:31.80, good for second place.
Individually, Buck won the triple jump with a mark of 13.13m / 43' 1" and also placed sixth in the long jump at 6.04m / 19' 9.75".

- 4x200 Relay – 2nd - The combination of K. Bacon, L. Buck, S. Sampson and J. Hughes posted a time of 1.31.80
- Sprint Medley Relay (800m) – 1st - The combination of S. Freeman, L. Buck, D. Roof and J. Christopher posted a time of 1.37.38
Upcoming Schedule
The Cougars will be back on the track in Bakersfield for Western State Conference (WSC) meet No. 1 on Friday, Feb. 24.
Canyons is then slated to compete at the two-day Beach Opener hosted by California State University, Long Beach on March 3-4.
