College of the Canyons opened its season with a 4-0 home victory over Pasadena City College on Tuesday, taking just 15 minutes to get on the board and never looking back in a match that the Cougars controlled from the onset.
Lizeth Gutierrez-Cervantes was the first to find the net, making it a 1-0 game on an assist from Rebekah Brooks.
Katie Russell extended the lead at 2-0 on an odd play, after rebounding a free kick from the penalty box and promptly putting it into the back of the net. Maggie Maldonado was credited with an assist on the play that came in the 41st minute.
It was all Canyons (1-0) in the second half, and much in the same pattern, as Rebekah Brooks was next to get in on the action with an unassisted goal in the 62nd minute.
Jenavieve Mendoza rounded out the scoring in the 78th minute to put the score at 4-0.
The Cougars recorded 13 shots including nine on goal, compared to just two for the Lancers. Pasadena (0-2) did not record a shot on goal in the second half.
COC goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon (1-0) finished the match with two saves.
Canyons will return to action Wednesday, Sept. 8, for a 6 p.m. home match vs. Chaffey College.
