LANCASTER — College of the Canyons traveled to Antelope Valley College on Friday afternoon in an attempt to settle the score from its previous meeting with the Marauders, but ultimately had its efforts come up short.
Canyons (8-4-1, 5-1-1) was the first to score when Maggie Maldonado put the Cougars ahead 1-0 in the 27th minute.
The Cougars were able to keep AVC (11-3-2, 4-1-2) at bay through halftime, however the Marauders were able to tie it up quickly in the second half. Kelsey Ruiz snuck one past Cougars' goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon to tie the game at 1-1.
A short time after that, AVC's Bianca Carrillo put the ball away off a deflection from Yuzon's clearance of a corner kick. That score put the Marauders up 2-1 and the Cougars would trail the rest of the way.
Yuzon was in net for the full 90 minutes and was charged with the loss.
Canyons and AVC had previously played to a scoreless draw on Sept. 28 in Santa Clarita.
Friday's result ended COC's recent five game win streak. However, the Cougars are still leading the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division with a record of 5-1-1.
AVC and Citrus College are trailing in second, both with a 4-1-2 conference record on the season.
The Cougars are back in action to defend their first-place position at Bakersfield on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 4 p.m.
