Cougars Fall 1-0 to Citrus College
By Alexis Quevedo/COC Sports Information
College of the Canyons battled visiting Citrus College for what was an impressive defensive presence. Both teams entered the game looking to make a statement but it was ultimately a second half goal by Citrus that was the deciding factor.
A scoreless first half, backed by sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon with eight huge saves, allowed for Canyons (7-3-1, 4-1) to advance the ball and position themselves for scoring opportunities.
COC sophomore forward Rebekah Brooks was active on the attack having shot four times in the first half including a promising header on goal that was ultimately saved by the Citrus goalkeeper. Freshman Ryan Shepherd also provided a good offensive half for the Cougars with three nail biting strikes, but ultimately fell short to an active Citrus(11-1, 5-0) defensive unit.
In the second half, COC sophomore Sabine Yalung and freshman Natalia Zuluaga Ramirez were persistent on the attack providing a promising corner kick and header, to maintain pressuring the Citrus defenders.
The game deciding goal from Citrus came in the 77th minute off the foot of Alaissa Morales for what would be an eventual 1-0 final score.
Canyons fought hard to find good offensive scoring opportunities in hopes of finding the equalizer but ultimately could not answer back.
The Cougars next match will be away at Antelope Valley College on Friday, October 14. First touch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
