GLENDORA — No. 17 College of the Canyons met with host No. 12 Citrus College for its second matchup of the conference schedule, with the Cougars bringing home an important 2-0 victory.
Canyons (12-3-3, 9-1-2) previously fell to the Owls for its only loss in conference play. Friday's victory keeps the Cougars second in the Western State Conference (WSC), South Division standings, a game behind Antelope Valley College (13-3-3, 10-0-2) and very much in the running for the conference title.
Citrus (14-4-1, 8-3-1) found its rhythm early in the first half, connecting passes and having several attempts at net. Canyons soon found its stride, however, and matched the Owls energy having a couple close shots that found the post.
The scoreless first half continued for about 20 minutes into the second half until a penalty kick was awarded to the Cougars. Lauryn Bailey drove it past the Cirtus keeper in the 66th minute to give the Canyons the 1-0 edge. The score was Bailey's 14th of the season.
The Cougars continued to press the Owls' back line and 15 minutes later it paid off.
Bailey continued her reign in the midfield with a ball through to sophomore Rebekah Brooks who hammered the ball to the back of the net and moving the score to 2-0. Brooks now has 15 goals on the season.
Sophomore goalkeeper Kylie Yuzon (6-3-3) took command of the net from start to finish recording six saves in the game and earning the win.
Canyons will next host Antelope Valley on Tuesday, Nov. 8. The Cougars will host a pregame 'Sophomore Night' ceremony prior to the 6 p.m. first touch.
