Lady Cougars Fall in Postseason Match at Riverside City

RIVERSIDE — College of the Canyons, playing for the postseason for the second time in three seasons, was handed a 5-1 defeat by host Riverside City College in the opening round of the 3C2A Southern California Regional Playoffs.

Canyons (13-7) entered the match as the No. 5 seed but was matched against No. 3 Riverside City (16-2) to avoid pairing with another Western State Conference (WSC) program. COC was joined by No. 2 Glendale College, No. 4 Santa Monica College and No. 6 Bakersfield College as part of the eight-team postseason field from the Southern Region.

The match was halted after RCC had clinched its five points with three singles matches still underway. 

Sydney Tamondong and Estrella Segura teamed for an 8-3 win in the No. 1 doubles position for COC's lone point. 

Tamondong, Marie McCormick and Jaclyn Wosk all had their matches halted prior to conclusion. 

The Lady Cougars, which launched its women's tennis program in 2018, qualified for the postseason for the second time under head coach Patty LaBat. Canyons posted a 9-5 record in conference play to finish tied for third in the WSC standings.
