CERRITOS, Calif. — The College of the Canyons volleyball team struggled to close out opposing Cerritos on Saturday, finally putting the Falcons away in a fifth and deciding set to win 3-2 (26-24, 25-20. 19-25, 22-25, 15-7) and advance into the second round of the Cerritos Tournament.
After capturing a tightly contested first set, the Cougars (4-2) appeared to be in control after winning the second set 25-20. Cerritos would go on to win the next two sets and put pressure on COC — yet the Cougars were up to the task in the fifth set by easily dispatching the Falcons 15-7 in the final frame to move to 4-2 on the season.
Reliable sophomore Serena LeDuff came through for COC with 19 kills on 48 total attacks, along with 20 digs for a team-high 21.5 points. Assisting LeDuff, literally, was setter Katie Rutecki, who finished with 38 assists while Erica Magee's 11 points were good for second best in the win.
