College of the Canyons continued its winning ways as the No. 17 state ranked Cougars swept a rebuilding L.A. Pierce College team on Friday night in the Cougar Cage. Set scores were 25-7, 25-13, 25-12.
COC sophomore outside hitter Shayla Johnson led the way with 15 kills and six digs, while freshman middle blocker Grace Ferguson chipped in 11 kills on a .733 hitting percentage.
Set one saw the Cougars (8-5) jump out to a quick and commanding 10-1 lead behind the serving of Elizabeth Gannon, who collected two of her match high five aces during the service run. Kassidy Fitzpatrick chipped in another ace a short time later and the lead swelled to 17-2. The Cougars closed out a dominated first stanza with a double block from Toni Bito and Madison Martinez.
Set two was much of the same for the Cougars as strong serving from Gannon earned them an early lead. Georgia Sherman chiseled the block from the outside to extend the lead to 8-6 and then Johnson took over. She collected three straight kills as the lead grew to 18-8. It was a lead that would never be challenged as the Cougars opened a commanding 2-0 lead.
Johnson started off set three with two early kills and Madi Utz subbed into the game and fired an ace to open an 11-3 lead. Ferguson added an exclamation point to the set and the match with a two-handed stuff as the Cougars closed out their second straight sweep.
COC had previsoulsy defeated Santa Barbara City College 3-0 on Wednesday.
