CCCAA State Champion Danielle Salcedo was named the Western State Conference (WSC) Female Runner of the Year to headline a cast of six Cougar runners from the women's cross country program to earn all-conference honors.
Canyons finished third in the team standings at the WSC Championships held Oct. 22 at Legg Lake Park in the Whittier Recreation Area, while Salcedo ran to an individual conference title with her first-place time of 18:02.1.
Results from the WSC Championship meet were used to determine all-conference selections.
Salcedo's individual conference crown was the first in COC program history.
The freshman standout went on to win the individual 2021 CCCAA Southern California Regional and CCCAA State Championship, capping a season in which she ran undefeated against community college competition.
At the state meet Salcedo was named a 2021 JC All-American after posting a program-record time of 17:54.9 on the 5K Course at Woodward Park in Fresno.
Earlier in the fall semester Salcedo was named the California Community College Sports Information Association (CCCSIA) Athlete of the Month for September.
Joining Salcedo as an All-WSC First-Team selection was COC freshman Milca Osorio who finished fourth at the WSC Championships at a pace of 19:25.4. Osorio finished in the top-five at four events on the season before placing 40th in the field of 154 at the state championship meet.
COC sophomore Sarah Zamudio and freshman Trinity Winslow were both named All-WSC Second-Team.
Zamudio, a holdover from the Cougars' 2019 squad, ran the best race of her COC career at the conference championships with a time of 20:32.1 to finish 21st. The sophomore also finished 21st at the 2019 WSC Championships but was 2:38 faster this time around.
Winslow placed 27th at the WSC Championships with a season-best time of 21:06.9. That pace was more than two minutes quicker than her time at the WSC Preview event earlier in the month.
Freshman Maylani Perez and sophomore Diana Perez were named All-WSC Honorable Mention.
Diana Perez turned in a time of 21:54.9 to take 31st and Maylani Perez followed close behind in 35th at a time of 22:39.2 at the championship meet. Both marks represented season-best times.
Canyons finished ninth in the field of 20 teams at the 2021 state championship meet. That result was sixth best among Southern California schools. COC was also third among competing WSC programs.
