Baseball Opens Conference Play With 3-2 Victory Over Glendale
Sophomore pitcher Ryan Cruz tossed his second career complete game to lead College of the Canyons to a 3-2 victory over Glendale College in the squad’s conference home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sophomore pitcher Ryan Cruz tossed his second career complete game to lead College of the Canyons to a 3-2 victory over Glendale College in the squad's conference home opener on Tuesday afternoon at Cougar Field. The Cougars improved to 5-8-1 overall and 1-0 in conference, while Glendale College drops to 9-2 and 0-1 in conference play.
Cruz (2-2), who threw a complete game against San Bernardino College on May 3, 2013 in the first round of last year's playoffs, gave up five hits, two earned runs and walked one.
The Cougars opened up the game with two runs in the bottom half of the first inning. Following an error from the Vaqueros that allowed Nick Vigo to garner two bases, Jose Haros turned in a RBI double to score Vigo. Two batters later, Taylor Ready hit a sacrifice fly to bring in Haros and give COC a 2-0 lead.
With a lead headed into the bottom of the second, Canyons added one more run after a trio of miscues by the Vaqueros to up the score to 3-0.
The Cougars allowed the Vaqueros to add runs in the third and sixth innings, but Cruz held them scoreless the rest of the game.
Canyons only notched six hits in the game, while Glendale turned in five. Ready led the offense by going 2-of-3 with a RBI. He was the only Cougar with multiple hits.
COC will travel to Antelope Valley on Thursday, March 6 for a 2 p.m. conference game.
