Canyons Leads Field After Opening Round of Pt. Conception Open

LOMPOC — College of the Canyons began its 2024 season by taking the top spot in the team standings during the opening round of the two-day Pt. Conception Open at La Purisima Golf Course on Sunday.
Canyons turned in a five-player score of 399 to lead co-runner up programs Mt. San Antonio College and Ventura College with identical scores of 410. Bakersfield College (411) in fourth and Fresno City College (413) rounded out the top five in the field of 14 competing schools. Santa Barbara City College (414) was next in sixth place.
COC freshman Ethan Posthumus had the top score of the day with an even-par round of 72 to take opening round medalist honors.
Robert Scribner finished at 79 and was one of just 14 golfers from the field of more than 85 players to score under 80 for the day.
Freshman Hannes Yngve (80) and sophomore Paul Grimonpon, part of COC's 2023 squad, were next. Hugo Boyer (86) was the final scoring player for Canyons. Ben Steart also carded an 86 but had his total dropped from the final five-man tally.
Day two action continues Monday, Jan. 29 from Lompoc. The Cougars will then begin Western State Conference (WSC) play on Monday, Feb. 5 at Oakmont Country Club.
