Men’s and Women’s Track Teams Come In First at Conference Meet
The College of the Canyons track and field team finished in first place in both the men’s and women’s standings on Friday afternoon at the Western State Conference North Meet, hosted by Bakersfield College.
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – The College of the Canyons track and field team finished in first place in both the men's and women's standings on Friday afternoon at the Western State Conference North Meet, hosted by Bakersfield College. The Cougars competed against Allan Hancock, Cuesta, Santa Barbara, Ventura and Bakersfield in the six-team competition.
Canyons' athletes won 13 events, including eight, first-place finishes for the men and five top performances by the women's squad. The men finished with 198 points, followed by Allan Hancock's 103. The women led the meet with 134 points, narrowly beating out the host team, Bakersfield College, who came in second with 123 points.
Grant Stromberg put together a good meet, winning the 1,500-meter run with a 4:11.55 and the 3,000-meter run with a time of 9:15.35.
2013 state meet qualifier Anthony Fowler earned top honors in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.51 and Jeremy Gatewood topped the field in the 100-meter dash with a mark of 11.23. The men's 4x100 relay team turned in a 43.40 for a strong top finish.
In the men's field events, Kevin Felt cleared 12-6 in the pole vault, Matt Ringgold leaped 19-11.5 in the long jump and Marvin Magg notched 23-10 in the shot put, to win their respective events.
Jasmine Hall once again shined, this time bringing home three individual titles in the 100 (12.55), 200 (25.08) and the 100-meter hurdles (16.33). Hall also ran the anchor leg of the 4x100 relay team that turned in a 50.21, good for first.
Allison Perry rounded out the top performers, after earning a 30-7.75 mark in the triple jump.
Canyons will return to action on Saturday, March 8 as they travel to an eight-way meet at Cerritos College.
