Cougars Track & Field Posts Strong Showing in Bakersfield

College of the Canyons traveled to Bakersfield College to participate in the Western State Conference Inland Meet with the men's team taking second and women's squad in third.
COC's Simon Sampson led the way for the Cougars in the 100m claiming at a time of 11.30. Finishing fourth and fifth in the same event, Kory Bacon (11.48) and Dylan Roof (11.53) added several more points. Sampson also ran in the 200m, this time taking fourth with his time of 23.18.
More first place finishes for the Cougars included Heath Arceneaux (400h, 1:03.04), Phillip Vizmanos (Pole Vault, 3.90m/12'9.5") and the men's 4x100m relay team (43.48) consisting of Bacon, Joshua Christopher, Dylan Roof and Simon Sampson.
Continuing to tack on points in the sprints, freshman Jerome Hughes worked for a second-place finish in the 400m (50.45) where he was immediately followed by fellow Cougar Layne Buck in third (50.62).
Buck went on to jump to a second-place finish in both the long jump (6.48m/21'3.25") and triple jump (13.22m/43'4.5").
With a fourth-place finish in the 800m, Nathan Guzman (1:59.35) tacked on another four points for the Cougars.
Freshman Sam Regez also added another four points with his fourth-place finish in the 1500m (4:06.45).
Thoren Quintalla found points with his third-place finish in the discus event (32.43/106'5") and fifth-place finish in the shot put event (10.14m/33'3.25").
Closing out the day for Canyons, the men's 4x400m relay team consisting of Buck, Hughes, Christopher and Arceneaux nabbed a second-place finish with a time of 3:25.91.
The majority of the women's points came from COC sophomore Milca Osorio after she ran to a first-place finish in the 800m (2:29.81) and a third-place result in the 3000m (11.09.86), alongside a fourth-place time in the 1500m (5:00.01).
Osorio was also a member of the women's 4x400m relay team (4:30.65) that edged out Antelope Valley for a first-place victory. The team also included Emily Cruz, Trinity Winslow and Samantha Rodriguez.
COC freshman Samantha Rodriguez worked for a first-place position in both the 100h (18.24) and the 400h (1:11.60).
The Cougars will be back on the track on Friday, March 31 for the Moorpark Invitational hosted by Moorpark College.
