Canyons Preps for WSC Championships at OCC 'Last Chance' Meet

COSTA MESA — The Cougars traveled to Orange Coast College to participate in the OCC Last Chance Meet on April 14, ahead of next week's start to the Western State Conference (WSC) Prelims & Championships.
The Canyons men's team placed fifth and the women's squad took eighth.
The women saw a first-place finish from Milca Osorio in the 1500m with a time of 5:21.49. Teammate Emily Cruz followed Osorio in fourth place (5:40.59). Osorio also claimed a second-place result in the 800m (2:34.59).
COC's Zeniah Ellsworth represented the Cougars in the 100m (13.86) and the 200m (27.99) taking 12th and 11th, respectively.
Samantha Rodriguez finished just behind Ellsworth the 100m (13.99) in the 13th spot.
Rodriguez also finished sixth in the 400m hurdles (1:11.43) with Trinity Winslow a few paces behind in eighth (1:13.70). Winslow also fought for a fifth-place finish in the 100m hurdles (18.01).
On the men's side, the Cougars saw an impressive performance from Layne Buck in both the 200m and the long jump. Buck took third in the 200m (23.16) and second in the long jump with his best jump of the season (6.80m/22'3.75").
Sam Regez represented the Cougars in the 800m (1:58.99) taking third out of the field of 26 runners.
Also representing Canyons in distance, Cesar Tobar claimed a sixth-place finish in the 1500m (4:15.79) with fellow Cougar Nathan Guzman two seconds behind (4:17.34). Tobar also ran to a fifth-place finish in the 3000m with a time of 9:35.77.
Semaj Freeman took ninth in the 100m (11.51) and Phillip Vizmanos pole vaulted his way to second with a mark of 3.50m (11'5.75").
Thoren Quintanilla continued to represent Canyons in throws. His shotput mark of 11.47m / 37'7.75" earned him a sixth-place finish. He also placed eighth in the discus (33.34m / 109'4").

Upcoming Schedule
The Cougars will be back on the track Friday, April 21 to take part in day one of the WSC Prelims & Championships at Antelope Valley College. Events are scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with a combination of championship and qualifying events.
The action continues Friday, April 28 at Moorpark College with the conclusion of the WSC Championship meet events.
