Cougars Power Way to 80-60 Road Win
Friedl has another big night, scoring 24 points to lead all scorers.
GLENDALE, Calif. — A scorching first half resulting in a 27-point halftime lead powered the College of the Canyons women's basketball team to an easy 80-60 road victory over Glendale College on Wednesday night.
In the first half the Cougars shot an impressive 50 percent from the field while holding the Vaqueros to a mere 16.7 percent shooting percentage from the field.
The Cougars built their lead thanks to a 13-0 run to start the game with baskets from Monica Friedl and Qimmah Russo early on.
Canyons wouldn't let up, building its lead to as many as 32 points, eventually taking a 41-9 advantage with just under three and a half minutes to go in the first half.
The offense was led by freshman forward Monica Friedl's 16 points on an efficient 8-of-10 shooting performance. Friedl also grabbed five rebounds in the half.
COC entered halftime with a 47-20 lead didn't look back.
Glendale came out stronger in the second half but it wasn't enough to overcome the Canyons attack.
The Vaqueros chipped away at the COC lead, but not by much. Glendale would outscore COC in the second half, but the result was already sealed as the Cougars won their fifth conference game of the season.
Friedl finished with 24 points and seven rebounds, while Russo finished with 19 points and four steals.
The win takes COC's overall record to 15-11 and takes tits Western State Conference record one win closer to .500 at 5-6.
Canyons will next host West L.A. College at 5 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14.
