Lady Cougars Win 2015 'Solano Showdown' Tournament Championship
COC sophomore forward Hannah Green is named Tournament MVP, while Monica Friedl and Sara Ward earn All-Tournament Team honors.
FAIRFIELD, Calif. – The College of the Canyons women's basketball team rolled on to an 83-63 victory over Chabot College in the title game of the 'Solano Showdown' Tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The 'Solano Showdown' tournament championship is the first of the season for COC.
The Lady Cougars were led by the dominating play of sophomore forwards Monica Friedl and Hannah Green.
Friedl finished the contest with 21 points and 12 rebounds, while Green ended her afternoon with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Green also swatted away an impressive seven shots.
Green's efforts throughout the tournament resulted in her being named the tournament's Most Valuable Player.
Friedl and freshman Sara Ward were also named to the tournament's All-Tournament team. Ward scored 16 points in the tournament championship game.
In COC's three games at the tourney, Friedl netted 77 points — outscoring all other players in the tournament.
The tournament victory gives Canyons a 5-3 overall record on the season.
COC head coach Greg Herrick will next lead his team into the Coast Christmas Classic being held Dec. 17-19 at Costa Mesa College.
The Lady Cougars are slated to play Irvine Valley College in the tournament's opening round, with that game scheduled to tip off at 3 p.m.
