Canyons Finishes Runner-Up at State Championships, Shimoji Ties for Individual Lead

MORRO BAY – College of the Canyons finished runner-up at the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Women's Golf State Championships at Morro Bay Golf Club, two strokes behind back-to-back champion Modesto College, while seeing freshman Motoko Shimoji tie for first in the tourney's individual standings.
Canyons had built a 10-stroke lead after the tournament's opening round on Sunday but wasn't able to hold off a hot Modesto team on day two. The Lady Cougars finished with a four player, two-day score of 668 (331/337) just behind the two-day tally turned in by Modesto (666-350/316).
The title was the second in as many years for Modesto which also won the 2021 CCCAA State Championship at Cypress Ridge in Arroyo Grande.
COC won back-to-back titles in 2018 and 2019. The 2020 season was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Sadddleback College (672-343/329), which won the 2022 CCCAA Southern California Regional Championship, finished close behind the two leaders in third at the state tourney.
Shimoji carded rounds of 76 and 78 to tie for the lead at 154 in the field of 56 players from across the state. Her opening round score was one of just four to come in under 80. However, that score tied with Catherine Lee (154-75/79) of Fullerton College who was awarded medalist status by virtue of a tiebreaker. Lee's day one score was one stroke better than Shimoji.
COC freshman Flora Peugnet played perhaps her best golf of the season with rounds of 79 and 82 to finish fifth in the individual event standings at 161. Peugnet and Shimoji were both named to the 2022 CCCAA All-State Team.
Canyons freshman Carla Menendez finished ninth in the field with a final score of 165 (80/85).
Emma Tyni had her opening round of 96 counted towards the Canyons team score. She then shot a 98 on day two, which was dropped from the COC score. Instead, it was Brooke Maxwell's day-two round of 92 that went towards the Cougars' final score.
Canyons has finished runner-up at the CCCAA State Championships on six occasions (2000, 2002, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2022) with four state titles (2001, 2007, 2018, 2019) to its credit, all coming under head coach Gary Peterson.
The Cougars have now played at the state championship event 11 times in program history (2000, 2001, 2002, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2014, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2022), including four of the last five events.
