Canyons Sees Five Advance from WSC Singles & Doubles Tourney

VENTURA — College of the Canyons claimed five spots at the upcoming state championship tourney after completing its run at the annual Western State Conference (WSC) Singles & Doubles Championship hosted by Ventura College April 2-6.
COC's No. 1 singles player Sydney Tamondong advanced all the way to the semifinal round before having her run come to an end. The sophomore started as the No. 3 seed and received an opening round bye before logging a win (6-0, 6-0) over Kaelin Vasquez of Antelope Valley College. In the third round it was Tamondong playing to another victory (6-4, 6-4) this time over Jamielyn Diaz of Glendale College.
In Friday's quarterfinal round Tamondong was again victorious (6-0, 6-1) over Mia Shields of L.A. Mission College. However, later in the day the run came to an end with a loss (5-7, 6-2) to No. 2 seed Anaya Ayanbadejo of Santa Monica College in the quarterfinal round.
At the end of the tournament Tamondong received All-Western State Conference (WSC) Honorable Mention honors in the No. 1 singles position. She also qualified to compete at the CCCAA State Championship tourney being held in Ojai April 24-28.
Elsewhere in singles action Estrella Segura posted an overall record of 2-1 across two days of action. The freshman advanced into the second round with a result over Mia Ogebee of Santa Monica then advanced (6-0, 6-0) past Michaela Marquez of Glendale College in the second round. Her run then came to an end during the third run with a loss (1-6, 2-6) vs. Callie Tzab of Santa Barbara City College. Estrella will join Tamondong in playing at the state championship tourney.
Nina Laurien also advanced to the second round before being eliminated. Marie McCormick, Jaclyn Wosk and Michelle Pascault all suffered defeat in their opening-round matches.
In doubles action Canyons saw all three teams play well enough to advance to Ojai.
The duo of Tamondong/Segura won back-to-back matches following an opening round bye. They were then eliminated in the semifinal round by the No. 1 seeded team of Mane Sargsyan/Haruno Ono of Glendale College.
The teams of Faith Abt/Jaclyn Wosk and Marie McCormick/Laurien also recorded doubles victories before being eliminated.
Abt and Wosk were later named All-WSC First Team in the No. 3 doubles position. Wosk also took home individual All-WSC First Team accolades for the No. 6 position.
