By Jesse Muñoz/COC Sports Information Director
College of the Canyons student-athletes Jennifer Russell (women's tennis) and Jovan Camacho (baseball) have been named the COC Athletic Department's Women's & Men's Student-Athletes of the Week for the period running Feb. 27 to March 4. Russell and Camacho are the ninth set of honorees for 2023.
Jennifer Russell / Women's Tennis
Russell was a steady presence for a Lady Cougars team that finds itself in the midst of a tough run of Western State Conference (WSC) opponents.
The sophomore from Hart High School played to a 1-1 record in singles action while also going 2-0 in doubles play alongside partner Ellie Wingo. Despite those efforts Canyons suffered back-to-back losses vs. Glendale and L.A. Mission College.
For the season Russell, who earned All-WSC honors in 2022, is currently 5-5 in singles competition while teaming for an 8-3 mark in doubles matches.
Jovan Camacho / Baseball
Camacho finished the week 5-of-13 with three doubles, six runs, an RBI and a stolen base from the leadoff spot while extending his current hit streak to four games. That stat line came while playing against some of the top programs in the CCCAA Southern California region.
The West Ranch High School product started the week be going 2-for-5 with a pair of doubles and three runs in a loss at Orange Coast College. Two days later Camacho turned in another multi-hit effort, finishing 2-for-5 with another double, an RBI and a run scored in tight loss at Cypress College. He finished the week with another hit and two more runs, this time in a home loss to Cypress on Saturday.
For the season, Camacho is batting .300 with five RBIs, three stolen bases and a team-high 16 runs scored across 14 games. His 18 hits also lead the club.
