WHITTIER, Calif. - The College of the Canyons baseball team picked up its first win of the season on Saturday afternoon as it downed Rio Hondo, 7-6.
COC second baseman Chad DeLaGuerra gave the Cougars an early 2-0 lead when he hit his first homerun of the season after shortstop Garrett Fedor was hit by a pitch in the first inning.
The Cougars had a commanding 5-1 lead after 4 innings of play, until Rio Hondo hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth inning to cut the lead to 5-4.
Canyons got some important insurance runs in the seventh inning, as first baseman Jake Jelmini hit a two-run homer to give the Cougars a 7-4 lead.
Relief pitcher Cam McKay pitched a scoreless ninth inning to notch his first save of the season.
