Baseball To Meet East LA in Play-In Game
The College of the Canyons baseball team was named the No. 18 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Southern Regional Playoffs and will travel to No. 15 East Los Angeles College on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. for a single elimination, play-in game.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – The College of the Canyons baseball team was named the No. 18 seed in the California Community College Athletic Association Baseball Southern Regional Playoffs and will travel to No. 15 East Los Angeles College on Tuesday, April 29 at 2 p.m. for a single elimination, play-in game.
No. 16 Mt. San Antonio College and No. 17 El Camino College will play in the other play-in game. The lowest remaining seed from the play-in games will play No. 1 Orange Coast College and the second lowest remaining seed will play No. 2 Oxnard College on May 2-3 for the first round of the playoffs.
Canyons and East LA have already squared off this season – they met in the first game of the season in a 3-2 victory for Canyons on the road. East LA College took a 2-1 lead into the ninth inning and saw Ramos hammer a two-run homer that scored the game winner.
The post-season berth marks the fourth consecutive appearance in the playoffs. COC is not stranger to play-in games, as the team competed in the same game in 2012 and 2011, both times ending in defeat.
The Cougars squeaked into the playoffs after finishing in second place in the conference with a 19-16-1 overall record and 15-6 in Western State Conference, South Division play. The Cougars are the second-best team in the state in homers with 17 home runs, including seven from freshman first baseman Roberto Ramos.
East Los Angeles College turned in a 23-13 overall record and finished in three-way tied for first place with a 15-6 record in South Coast Conference play. The Huskies have three pitchers who boast an ERA under 2.00 and have tallied 242 strikeouts.
