After an offensive explosion carried the College of the Canyons baseball team to an opening day victory, the Cougars squeaked by Cerritos in a 2-0 pitching duel on Thursday.
COC starting pitcher Jesse Posey threw eight innings of scoreless baseball with just three hits allowed.
Cerritos pitcher Ryan Arambula also had a good day on the mound, matching Posey pitch for pitch by striking out seven COC batters in seven innings of work.
Unfortunately for Cerritos, the Cougars pounced on the Falcons' relief pitching in the ninth inning.
Cougars second baseman Colton Burns drove in a pair of runs with an RBI double in the top half of the final frame, opening up a save opportunity for reliever Jose Haros.
The win moves the No. 11 ranked Cougars to 2-0 to begin the season.
Next up for COC is a Saturday matchup at Mt. SAC, followed by a home showing against Rio Hondo on Tuesday.
