The College of the Canyons baseball team began its season with an impressive offensive display, downing Pierce College 8-3 in its season home opener at Cougar Field on Tuesday.
Earning the win for the Cougars was standout pitcher JC Cloney, who put in six innings of work and allowed just one earned run with eight strikeouts.
COC took an early lead in the bottom of the first inning, when leadoff hitter Cole Mears scored on a sacrifice fly by third baseman Dylan Freyre.
The Cougars would eventually gain a decisive 6-1 advantage over Pierce in the third inning, when a pair of RBI singles by Tyler and Jake Ryan was followed by a two-run homer courtesy of right fielder Roy Verdejo.
COC took an 8-1 advantage into the ninth inning, but surrendered a pair of unearned runs before relief pitcher Jase Young closed out the win.
Tyler Ryan's two RBI's tied Verdejo for the team high in the win.
Canyons will next travel to Cerritos for a 2 p.m. contest on Thursday, Jan. 29.
