Canyons is topped by Glendale 10-3 in Extra Innings
COC leadoff hitter Colton Burns finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs.
For the second time in three days, the College of the Canyons baseball team fell in extra innings, this time allowing a seven-run tenth inning to Glendale College in losing 10-3 at home on Tuesday afternoon.
The back-to-back losses come after the Cougars had previously been on a five-game winning streak. It marked the first time since Feb. 26-27 that the Cougars lost consecutive games. Ironically, both of those contests were extra innings losses.
With Glendale up 2-0, COC came back to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Jake Spurlin and Jassen Oliver singled to put runners on first and second base. With two out, Colton Burns then singled to center field and reached second base after Glendale committed a throwing error. Spurlin and Oliver scored tying the game at 2-2.
COC's leadoff hitter, Burns finished 2-for-5 with two RBIs in the game and now has 10 RBIs on the season while batting .367 for head coach Chris Cota's club.
The Cougars briefly took the lead in the bottom of the eighth after Spurlin doubled in Chris Devery from second base after being hit by a pitch. Spurlin went 2-for-5 with a run scored and an RBI in the game.
The Cougars held their 3-2 lead entering the ninth inning but gave up the tying run in the top of the frame, spoiling COC starting pitcher Collin Dudley's strong outing.
Dudley exited after allowing the run but had a strong outing otherwise, pitching eight and 2/3 innings and allowing only two earned runs on eight hits. He also struck out eight Vaqueros batters in taking the no-decision.
COC's Chad Haslock took over for Dudley and closed the ninth, but didn't survive a Glendale onslaught in the tenth inning, as the Vacqueros scored seven runs to go up 10-3.
The Cougars were unable to strike back, which ended the game in 10 innings.
The loss drops COC's record to 12-7 overall and 5-2 against Western State Conference (WSC) opponents. The two teams had entered the game tied atop the WSC, South standings.
The Cougars next travel to Antelope Valley College for a game at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19.
