Football Smashes East L.A. College, 53-7

MONTEREY PARK, Calif. –The College of the Canyons Cougars scored seven touchdowns and held East Los Angeles to 94 total offensive yards as COC marched over the Huskies, 53-7, on Saturday night.
Without its starting quarterback Andrew Miramontes, who was out due to injury, College of the Canyons earned a majority of its yardage on the ground as the team collected 338 yards rushing and 136 in the air for a total of 474 yards.
The first score of the game came from COC when defensive back Marcus Udell grabbed his first of two interceptions at the ELA 22-yard line and returned it 20 yards to the two. Freshman running back Fred Winborn finished the drive with a 2-yard scamper into the end zone and COC took a 7-0 lead with 9:42 left in the first quarter.
The Huskies recorded their only points of the game on the next possession as East Los Angeles scored relatively easy with a four play, 73-yard push to tie the game at 7-all.
Wide receiver Hayo Carpenter, who had seven receptions for 108 yards and one touchdown, pulled down a 31-yard TD pass from quarterback Joey Frias at the 2:22 mark and gave the Cougars a 14-7 advantage.
Running back Raphael Reynolds had his own touchdown run with 8:08 left in the half – a 5 yarder. The extra point by kicker Paul Weinstein, who went 4-of-4 on the night, gave Canyons a 21-7 lead.
Frias scored the next two touchdowns in for COC – a 3-yard run with 2:02 left in the second half and a 7-yard rushing touchdown with at 10:55 in the third quarter.
The Cougars ended the game scoring 18 more points in the fourth quarter, which included a 23-yard run by Reynolds, a 2-yard carry by quarterback Bradford McClellan, a safety and a 31-yard field goal by kicker Ken Shigley Jr.
Tyler Roby had his fourth interception of the year, which included a 40-yard return. KT Thomas led the team with six tackles, four solo, one tackle for a loss, a sack and one hurry.
Carpenter had another fantastic game as he garnered 125 yards on 18 receptions and one touchdown and Reynolds had 14 rushes for 114 yards and two scores. Winborn racked up 125 total rushing yards, his fourth straight game with 100+ yards rushing. Frias was 6-of-11 for 84 yards and one touchdown in his first collegiate start at quarterback.
The Cougars improved to 6-1, 4-0, while East L.A. dropped to 0-7, 0-4.
The Cougars enter the toughest three-game stretch this weekend as they host Allan Hancock (5-2, 4-0) on Saturday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. Following the Hancock game, COC hosts Harbor (4-3, 2-2) on Nov. 3 and then travels to Bakersfield (7-0, 4-0) on Nov. 10 for the last regular season game of the season.
