Winborn Scores Four, Cougars Roll Past Moorpark
Sophomores Hayo Carpenter and Fred Winborn combined to tie and break four school records on Saturday night against Moorpark College in rout to their second conference win, 48-3.
SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – Sophomores Hayo Carpenter and Fred Winborn combined to tie and break four school records on Saturday night against Moorpark College in rout to their second conference win, 48-3.
Running back Winborn broke the school record for carries in a career with a two-year total of 240, surpassing the former record of 233 held by Marcel Marquez during the 2004-05 season. He also tied the record for rushing TDs in a game with four on the night. He accomplished the same feat twice last year. The four scores did move him into a tie with now Arizona Cardinal J.J. Arrington for career rushing touchdowns with 29. Wide receiver Carpenter now holds the milestone of the best single game receiving yardage after pulling down 225 yards on Saturday. The record had been held by Mark Hamilton, who had 214 yards in a game against Glendale during the 1998 season.
The win marks the 100th win since the football program was reinstated at the college in 1998. COC is now 100-23 during the past 11 years.
The COC defense played a large part in the win against the Raiders, holding Moorpark to only nine first downs and 139 yards of total offense (53 yards rushing, 86 yards passing). This is the first game of the season that COC has held the opposing team out of the end zone for a score and it also held the Raiders to 2.4 yards per play, under COC's average of giving up 3.3 yards per play on the season.
Carpenter opened up the game with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, his first of the season. The kick from Ricky Drake, who was 5-of-6 on point after attempts, was good and COC took a quick 7-0 lead.
On the ensuing drive, Moorpark scored its only points of the game on a 12 play, 42-yard march to the COC 19-yard line, setting up a 36-yard field goal for the Raider's kicker. The field goal attempt was good and that would be the closest Moorpark would get to COC.
Canyons went on to score on three consecutive possessions, scoring 21 more points just in the first half. All of the scores were carried in by Winborn on runs of 14, 12 and 3 yards respectively. Winborn would score one more touchdown in the third quarter on a 1-yard carry, bringing his total to four scores in the game.
The Raiders held the Cougar offense in the second quarter after being dominated in the first. Moorpark held COC out of the end zone for two drives, but gave up a 14-yard touchdown pass between quarterback Brad McClellan and Carpenter with five seconds left in the half as COC went up 34-3 at halftime.
COC scored two more touchdowns in the second half, including a 1-yard carry by McClellan in the fourth quarter to make up the final points for COC.
McClellan was 19-of-26 for 298 yards and one touchdown while also leading the team in rushing with 18 carries for 155 yards and one touchdown. Winborn carried the ball 12 times for 74 yards and four touchdowns and Carpenter had 12 catches for 225 yards and one touchdown.
Freshman Marquis Jackson had two sacks for a loss of 19 yards, a pass breakup and five tackles (four solo). Linebacker Eric Wells led the Cougars with seven tackles (six solo) on the night.
The Cougars improve to 6-0, 2-0 in conference, a feat that hasn't occurred since the 2005 season when the Cougars were 12-0 until a loss to Grossmont College in the SoCal Championships.
Moorpark drops to 3-2, 0-1 in conference. The Cougars will travel to Glendale College of Saturday, Oct. 18. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
